Col. Rhett Blackmon, Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District discusses the Brazos River Crossing portion of the Brazos River Flood Gates – Colorado River Locks Project with district staff and members of the Inland Waterways Users Board (IWUB) Nov. 30, 2022, during a visit to the project in Freeport, Texas. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Jaime A. Pinkham and Deputy Commanding General for Civil Works and Emergency Operations Maj. Gen. William H. Graham, Jr., and the IWUB team were on hand to provide analytical support on a variety of topics requested by members of the IWUB board, USACE Headquarters, and field operating agencies as they work to develop the draft IWUB report to Congress. IWUB members and staff visited the Brazos River Floodgates in conjunction with the 98th IWUB board meeting that took place Dec. 1, 2022, in Galveston, Texas. The IWUB is an advisory board established to monitor the Inland Waterways Trust Fund and to make recommendations to the Army and to Congress on investment priorities using resources from the Fund. Located seven miles southwest of Freeport, Texas, the Brazos River Floodgates have been instrumental in controlling sand and silt deposits and aiding navigation at the intersection of the Brazos River and Gulf Intercoastal Waterway since 1943.
