This ditch section is the first phase of a four-part flood risk management project to help mitigate city flood risk from future flooding events.
Joining in the event were the Wharton Council members Don Mueller, Larry Pittman and Clifford Jackson, the City Manager Joseph Pace, and many other city officials. The Army Corps of Engineers team included members from both districts to include Army Capt. Joseph Sterr, Mike Kingston and Andrew Park, all from the Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with Don Carelock, Rob Thomas and Brandon Smolinsky from Galveston District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Unable to attend in person due to mission requirements, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District was an essential partner in the successful project completion.
The entire project is projected to be completed in 2028.
