GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Jan. 26, 2022) Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Calvin J. Coon, right, an instructor stationed with Surface Warfare Engineering School Command Great Lakes (SWESC GL), demonstrates the Visual Identification Virtual Reality (VIVR) training simulator used in Boatswain’s Mate “A” School to Rear Adm. Brendan McLane, Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic, during a visit to Naval Station Great Lakes accession training sites. The VIVR is a computer-based system designed to increase the situational awareness of lookout watch standers around the bridge and other strategic points aboard naval vessels, giving students realistic exposure to time-critical decision making on station. The visit included touring facilities and engaged with Sailors at SWESC GL schools and Recruit Training Command, including observing the latest in modernized training methods for ready relevant learning. Rear Adm. McLane is responsible for manning, training and equipping assigned surface forces and shore activities, ensuring a capable force for conducting prompt and sustained operations in support of United States national interests.
