This Fort Riley Friday we head to Artillery Parade Field on historic Main Post. By 1887, there were separate posts for the cavalry and the artillery. The cavalry was centered around Cavalry Parade Field, while the artillery took up residence in a new area surrounding Artillery Parade Field. Officer housing was centered around Schofield Circle and Building 100, the commander’s quarters and a structure very similar to Quarters 1, the cavalry commander’s quarters. (We’ll look closer at Schofield Cir. in a future Fort Riley Friday post.) Today, the expanse of Artillery Parade Field makes it the perfect location for the annual Fall Apple Day Festival. Artillery Parade Field has hosted the event for several years after it was relocated from Cavalry Parade Field.
