SOUTH CHINA SEA (Feb. 2, 2023) - Equipment Operator 3rd Class Kevin Epperly, assigned to Beachmaster Unit (BMU) 1, conducts M4 service rifle maintenance aboard amphibious transport dock ship USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), Feb. 2, 2023. The M4 service rifle is used across the fleet for force protection measures, and live-fire exercises are required every six months to reinforce proper weapons handling proficiency, sustaining lethality of watch standers Navy-wide. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) and amphibious transport docks USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations with the embarked 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to enhance interoperability with Allies and partners and serve as a ready-response force to defend peace and maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
