230218-N-MK318-1213 EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN (Feb 18, 2023) Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Sam Peterson, a Blue crew Sailor aboard Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Mobile (LCS 26), hand signals an MH-60R helicopter, attached to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 49 (HSM 49), to lift off from the ship’s flight deck, Feb. 18. Littoral Combat Ships are fast, optimally manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats.
