Meet Sgt. Gustavo Rivera, a network node specialist with 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. Rivera has spent over four years on Fort Riley. His favorite part? The people. “Fort Riley has a lot of great leaders, great Soldiers and a lot of good people to both learn from and mentor.”
Rivera’s favorite part of being a noncommissioned officer is the ability to pass on his knowledge and experiences to others. Helping his Soldiers learn and master their job proficiencies using what he learned is what makes his day-to-day. Being an NCO is no cakewalk, however. According to Rivera, having to take care of so many people at once can quickly become the hardest part of his job. For him, the job does not end with work, he does his best to ensure that all his people are taken care of all the time, both professionally and personally. “But it’s worth it,” Rivera says. “Definitely worth it.”
Rivera’s advice for other leaders? Always remember where you started.
“You were at the bottom once, now that you’re moving up- always make sure you’re taking care of the people below you.”
