U.S. Marines with Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, take part in a bi-lateral mortar live-fire exercise at Hijudai, Japan on Feb. 24, 2023. The exercise was conducted to effectively communicate and coordinate bi-lateral mortar tactics in conjunction with other maneuver elements during Iron Fist 23. Iron Fist is an annual bilateral exercise designed to increase interoperability and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japan Ground Self Defense Force, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
