U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charles W. Gregory (second from left) discusses the role, training and development of noncommissioned officers during the “Leader Development” plenary session of the African Alumni Symposium (AAS), in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Feb. 28, 2023. Gregory was joined by the Dean of the U.S. Army War College, Dr. Edward Kaplan, (left), Republic of Malawi's National Defense College Commandant, Brigadier General Dan Kuwali and Director, Security Cooperation Directorate, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), Col. Matthew Kopp. AAS is one of the key multilateral engagements to strengthen partnerships between the U.S. Army and numerous land forces across the African continent. AAS is designed to bring together African alumni of the U.S. Army War College back to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to interact with the academic and subject matter experts in African security issues. This partnership also promotes dialogue among African nations and the U.S. Army. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Collaborative Security Building” with specific focus on the recently published U.S. Army African Strategy, leader development, and nontraditional security challenges.
