Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. senator, stops for a moment during a tour of the new Ford Island Child Development Center (CDC) to say hello to 11-month-old Poppy Fischbach and CDC employee Chloe Miller, Oct. 24, 2012. The new CDC is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, sustainable facility. The 37,404 square foot facility is expected to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment for 304 children, ranging in age from six weeks to five years. The CDC contains 24 flexible activity rooms, a 1,200 square foot commercial kitchen, laundry and restroom facilities, storage, training rooms, and administrative spaces. The floor plan allows classroom windows to overlook central courtyards that feature new playground equipment.
