The Mazama pocket gopher is close to being listed on the endangered species list and a portion of its critical habitat is located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Because of shrinking habitat, the training areas on JBLM are one place where humans and wildlife can coexist. Wildlife management teams on JBLM ensure that the base is in compliance with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's regulations. By monitoring the species protection and population growth the teams also ensure soldiers' abilities to use the training areas now and in the future.
