The South Dakota Army National Guard named Spc. James Furry, of Sioux Falls, Soldier of the Year, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at the Duke Corning Armory on Camp Rapid. The award is the top honor for the enlisted corps within the state’s Army National Guard. Furry has advanced through company, battalion, brigade and state-level competitions and will represent the South Dakota Army National Guard at the Region 6 Best Warrior Competition held in Oregon in June, where he will compete against Soldiers selected from seven other states.
