U.S. Navy, state and local officials broke ground on a $3 million Wildlife Exclusion Fence surrounding the airfield onboard Naval Air Station Meridian during a ceremony, March 7. The partnership between the State of Mississippi, the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors and Naval Air Station Meridian ensures mission sustainability of McCain Airfield by installing the fence to reduce the risk of wild animal and aircraft incursions. Dignitaries speaking during the ceremony will be: The Honorable Tate Reeves, Governor of Mississippi; Captain Greg Smith, Chief of Staff for Navy Region Southeast; Captain Brent Moore, NAS Meridian Commanding Officer; and Jonathan Wells, President of the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors. The current project consists of 34,500 linear feet of a 10-foot chain link with three strands of barbwire on top of the fence. The veteran-owned contractor will be Delta Specialty Contractors, LLC of Monroe, Louisiana. They specialize in commercial fencing and work primarily in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas.
