Some of Fort Sill’s rainwater flows through a series of ditches built by Henry O. Flipper, who in the late 1870s engineered a system to drain several ponds blamed for causing malaria. The drainage system, known as “Flipper’s Ditch,” is still in use today and is registered as a National Historic Landmark.
