U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Rafael Salas, an engineer equipment maintenance chief from 7th Engineer Support Battalion assigned to Marine Corps Engineer Detachment – Palau, prepares the chain to lift WWII artifacts out of the ground on Peleliu, Republic of Palau, March 3, 2023. Marines with MCED-Palau worked with local officials to prepare future project sites and preserve historical artifacts. During this rotational deployment, Navy Seabees and Marine Corps engineers undertake infrastructure projects which benefit local populations in the Indo-Pacific and enhance the United States’ ability to render support and aid in response to disasters or other crises.
