U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Staples, 647th Air Base Group commander and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam deputy commander, commemorates Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony at the Ka Makani Community Center with children from Cub Scout Pack 297 and Hickam Community members, February 6, 2023. The tree planted, Kou, is indigenous to the Hawaiian islands and planted as a favorite shade tree. It has also been used to treat ‘ea (thrush), a disease of young children. Arbor Day is marked by the planting of trees and emphasizes caring for them as a way to sustainably protect our planet’s natural resources. (U.S. Navy photo by Joanne Hayag)
