Pfc. Kharon L. Mitchell of East Orange, N.J., combat engineer with 3rd platoon, 66th Engineer Company, and Staff Sgt. Ichiro Umemoto of Kyoto, Japan, with the 33rd Infantry Regiment, Japan Ground Self Defense Force, establish a perimeter during training on improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Troops from both sides shared knowledge that was beneficial for all involved during Orient Shield 12 at the Aibano Training Area near Imazu City, Japan. Orient Shield is an annual bilateral tactical field training exercise designed to enhance the combat readiness and interoperability of both forces while strengthening their relationship.
