Brig. Gen. Burke Whitman, the assistant division commander for 2nd Marine Division, and Capt. Gary Boardman, commanding officer of the USS Wasp (LHD-1), talk about the different material used on the deck of the ship between the Wasp and an aircraft carrier, on Oct. 24. Due to high temperatures put off by an Osprey’s turbines, the tarmac has to be fitted with a certain material that will withstand the high temperatures and not melt the tarmac. This is vital to the new training that is coming for division because they plan to incorporate air vehicles along with amphibious assault vehicles during beach landings.
