Petty Officer 3rd Class Hannah E. Harper, a marine science technician attached to the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Savannah, participates in National Women's History Month in Savannah, Georgia, Feb. 27, 2023. Military service has been a tradition in Harper's family, with her grandfather and dad serving in the U.S. Air Force. "I was motivated to join the Coast Guard after having a retired Coast Guard commander who was a prior boatswain mate as a teacher," said Harper. "I knew that I wanted to serve my country in some way, but after hearing about the Coast Guard's multitude of humanitarian missions, along with the ratings and possible opportunities, I knew where I needed to be."
