Rafael Hiciano, assigned to the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60), shows his son the ship’s bell following a christening ceremony on the forecastle of the ship while Normandy is in home port with the Ford Carrier Strike Group, April 5, 2023. The tradition of performing consecrations or baptisms using a ship’s bell originated with the British Navy, but is maintained by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard and is considered good luck.
