In Assiut, USAID Mission Director Leslie Reed accompanied by Eng. Raslan, Chairman of HCWW and his deputies, commissioned the USAID-supported Dronka wastewater collection system that will allow an additional 40,000 people in Assiut governorate to receive wastewater services for the first time and support tourism for pilgrims visiting St. Mary’s Monastery.
Additionally, the Mission Director visited the newly established central laboratory for water furnished by USAID, which will also serve the whole Upper Egypt. The lab will work with the water companies and perform needed analysis to ensure delivery of safe drinking water to Egyptians.
The inauguration and commissioning of these systems builds on USAID’s long term investment in Egypt’s water resources. In 2009, USAID supported the establishment of the Sohag and Assiut water and wastewater companies, which now employ more than 12,000 people and provide critical water and wastewater services to over 10 million people.
Since 1978, USAID has invested more than $3.5 billion to bring clean water and sanitation services to the homes of over 25 million Egyptians. USAID constructed and rehabilitated water and wastewater systems in Cairo, Alexandria, three Suez Canal cities, Mansoura, North Sinai, and across Upper Egypt.
