This #FortRileyFriday we begin our look at some of the buildings constructed on post as part of an Army-wide initiative to upgrade facilities after #WorldWarI. This construction program began in 1927 with the goal of replacing temporary #WWI structures with permanent structures for a peacetime Army. The program continued nationwide until about 1940.

Fort Riley received many new permanent buildings as part of this program. The first were five four-family apartments for student officers constructed in 1928. These buildings (438, 439, 440, 441 and 444 Carpenter Avenue/Place) were erected just to the northeast of Artillery Parade Field. These facilities became a necessity due to a December 1927 fire that destroyed two temporary buildings that served as quarters for thirty-two company officers.

During this time construction shifted from the use of native #limestone to #brick because brick buildings were quicker to put up. Brick construction was also considered cheaper at that time.

We'll take a look at additional buildings constructed during this period in the upcoming weeks.
