Irena Sendler was a 29-year-old Polish social worker when World War II broke out. Her employment with the Welfare Department of the Warsaw municipality helped her gain access to the Warsaw ghetto to inspect the sanitary conditions. She saw this as an opportunity to help as many children as she could to escape. She helped smuggle more than 2,500 children to safety, even knowing what the consequences could be if the Nazis ever found out. She was later arrested, imprisoned, and tortured for her actions.
