Maj. Gen. Jonathan M. Stubbs, the adjutant general of the Arkansas National Guard, met with the Col. of Infantry DEM Edgar Rolando Mendez Divas, Commander of Military Brigade Mariscal Zabala at the Mariscal Zabala base, “Fuerzas de Tierra” park, in Guatemala City.

The "Mariscal Zavala" Military Brigade is the oldest military unit of the Guatemalan Army, and their base in Fuerzas de Tierra park is home to the Guatemalan Army’s NCO Academy established to strengthen and modernize the leadership in the enlisted ranks.

Maj, Gen. Stubbs took the opportunity to thank Col. Mendez Divas for his support in many of the exercises that are conducted all over Guatemala throughout the year that find Arkansas National Guard members working side by side with the Mariscal Zabala Infantry Brigade, most recently CENTAM Guardian 2023.

CENTAM Guardian 2023 exercise brought the Central American countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador with 60 members of the Arkansas National Guard, and the U.S. Army to conduct combined joint military training focused on sharing information and developing strategies to combat Transnational Criminal Organizations. The exercise was an opportunity for Arkansas to work with our partner nation, Guatemala, in an operation that emphasizes interagency coordination and cooperative action and information sharing to strengthen regional security.

CENTAM Guardian 2023 is an annual Army-led joint, interagency, a multi-national partnership-building exercise designed to build capacity and capabilities with Central American partner nations.
