    U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Christopher Williams, a transmission system operator with 1st Marine Division, performs a radio check during a communications event as part of Exercise Freedom Shield 23 in Pohang, Korea, March 17, 2023. The event provided training to set up secure communications between Republic of Korea and U.S. Marine radios. The 1st Marine Division is attached to III Marine Expeditionary Force to serve as the ground combat element for the Combined Marine Component Command, Combined Forces Command, during Freedom Shield. Freedom Shield is a defense-oriented exercise designed to strengthen the ROK-U.S. alliance, enhance combined defense posture, and strengthen security and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
