Many of the 2,300 U.S. service members buried at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near the French village of Belleau were U.S. Marines who perished in the early days of June 1918 in the woods and wheat fields near the site. The Battle of Belleau Wood marked an important victory for the Americans and remains a prominent part of Marine Corps history.
