A recruit of Company I, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, begins to fall off the pugil stick stage after being struck by a pugil stick aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Oct. 29. The pugil stick bouts were designed to teach recruits the fundamentals of hand to hand combat. For some recruits it was their first time in a fight.
