U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Tebias Mason, the expeditionary ground reconnaissance officer for Force Recon Company, 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division, receives a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal, gold Recon Challenge Competitor badge and a custom made paddle during the 14th annual Reconnaissance Challenge on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, April 28, 2023. To honor their fallen comrades and support the Gold Star families through their struggle, reconnaissance Marines and veterans participate in a 25-mile obstacle course throughout Camp Pendleton that tests their physical limits and enhances camaraderie. Each competitor carries a rucksack with a combat load and the name of a fallen Marine or sailor attached to the back. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Mhecaela J. Watts)
