230419-N-NT811-1005 SAN DIEGO (April 19, 2023) Tugboats push the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Canberra (LCS 30) to a pier at Naval Air Station, North Island for an onload, prior to a routine underway off the California Coast. Littoral Combat Ships are fast, optimally manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats. LCS integrates with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward presence, maritime security, sea control and deterrence missions around the globe.
