When sub-tropical storm Sandy struck the New York City area on October 29, 2012, it knocked out electricity for tens of thousands of residents of the New York City area, and no electricity soon equated to deal cell phone battery's. At local disaster recovery centers set-up around the city, FEMA set up cell phone charging stations so residents could charge their phones, allowing them to talk to friends and loved ones, as well as conduct business.
