A resin-based filtration system in an on base groundwater treatment plant extracts and treats water before injecting it back into the ground at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., April 13, 2023. The system extracts affected water from the underground water supply and uses resin beads to trap molecules of PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, allowing unaffected water to pass through and be reinjected back into the ground or discharged into the Wateree River.
