Spc. Zachary Carroll, a member of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Horse Detachment, rides Comanche at Salinas River State Beach, Moss Landing, Calif., May 13. Comanche is a historic Army name for horses because it is the name of the sole-surviving horse from the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. It is also the name of the first horse to become a member of the 11th ACR Horse Detachment, donated by Maj. Gen. Terry Tucker in 2001. That year marked the regiment’s centennial.
