Carney was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on June 21, 2022, and returned to his family for burial with full military honors. Carney was assigned to the 345th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air Force and was serving as a gunner when his aircraft encountered enemy fire and crashed during Operation TIDAL WAVE. His remains were not identified following the war and he was buried as an Unknown in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan, Ploiești, Prahova, Romania (U.S. Army photo by Sgt.
