A U.S. Marine color guard with Headquarter Battalion, Marine Forces Reserve stand at parade rest during a ceremony as a part of the National WWII Museum, Armed Forces Day Celebration in New Orleans, May 20, 2023. Celebrated on the third Saturday of May, Armed Forces Day is one of many military-themed holidays during the month of May, Military Appreciation Month. August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day in replacement of the separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days. This celebration was developed from the fusion of all branches under one department, the Department of Defense.
In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, President Harry Truman said, "Armed Forces Day … marks the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, toward the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense." (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Sarah Pysher)
