U.S. Army 1st. Sgt. Wesley Averkamp, assigned to Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, pins the Gold Star Lapel Button to Trecia Johnson, a surviving sister of U.S. Army Pfc. John Timothy Lane, during the 55th anniversary commemoration ceremony honoring fallen Vietnam War service members at Locust Grove Cemetery in Brewster, Washington, May 27, 2023. The ceremony was held in honor of Lane and Marine Lance Cpl. Marvin Earl Galbraith; Lane was awarded, posthumously, the Distinguished Service Cross for displaying extraordinary heroism by jumping on an enemy grenade that was thrown at his unit during a night battle near Duc Hoa, May 4, 1968. Averkamp was requested to present the Gold Star Lapel Button to both Lane’s surviving sisters while simultaneously representing the unit’s prior lineage and honors. Lane was assigned to Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, before the unit was ultimately reassigned to the 4th Infantry Division in 2014.
