Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Lt. Cmdr. Fumihiro Tanno, a member of Air Rescue Squadron 71, receives a challenge coin from U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, May 31, 2023. Tanno was recognized by Secretary Austin for his role in multiple rescues at sea, to include the rescue of a family stranded at sea south of Okinawa in June 2022. Austin is visiting Japan as part of his seventh official visit to the Indo-Pacific region, where he is scheduled to meet with the Japanese Defense Minister and other senior leaders, as well as U.S. troops stationed in Japan.
