Wiesbaden Middle School students visit Domäne Mechtildshausen, an organic farm, just outside the gates of the Clay Kaserne, May 26, 2023.
Enthusiastic? Probably not, if you look at the faces of the students after an odor test on silage, a feed for farm animals preserved by lactic acid fermentation, from the hand of Marieke Denaes, pedagogue, and guest guide of the Domäne. In line with the Army’s efforts to reduce waste and promote recycling, it was important for the students to realize how effective circular economy can be. This was demonstrated to the children using the example of grass and the silage produced from it, which in turn serves as feed for the cows, whose excrement can then be used in the fields as fertilizer for the newly growing grass.
