NORFOLK, Virginia (April 20, 2023) USS Iwo Jima’s (LHD 7) maintenance team stages the port rudder in preparation for a first-time and first-in-class underwater rudder reinstallation by Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center’s (MARMC) Dive Team. MARMC’s dive team worked continuously in two person teams for the first 23-hours to line up the 46,000-pound rudder into position with only two-thousandths of an inch clearance between the rudder stock and the bearing. MARMC, a field activity under Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), provides surface ship maintenance, management and oversight of private sector maintenance and fleet technical assistance to ships in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
