Illinois Army National Guard Lt. Col. Mark Bermel of Springfield speaks during his retirement ceremony on June 2 at Camp Lincoln in Springfield. Bermel dropped out of high school before he joined the Army. He would earn his GED and rise to the rank of staff sergeant before commissioning through the Illinois Army National Guard's Officer Candidate School and earning a college degree from Eastern Illinois University. He would serve as both an Infantry officer and Human Resources Officer. He would deploy as an Infantry officer twice including to Afghanistan where he led security forces in Kandahar. He would command the 108th Special Troops Battalion before his final assignment as the operations officer for the Illinois Army National Guard's G-1 (personnel office.) He retired after 30 years of service.
