U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Brian W. Cavanaugh, Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, Commander, Marine Forces Command, Marine Forces Northern Command, speaks to members of U.S. maritime services attending the Association of Naval Services Officers (ANSO) annual eastern region symposium at Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia, June 6, 2023. During the symposium, Cavanaugh provided remarks and answered questions from the participants about this year's theme: "Leadership Development from Intention to Impact." Cavanaugh emphasized the importance of leaders having empathy: "The most important principle of leadership is empathy. The best leaders will show it. I believe it's probably the most important leadership trait to try to walk in someone's shoes and understand where they're coming from."
ANSO’s annual program consists of working-level symposia co-located with local chapters. The symposia are designed to provide members with career management support and one-on-one mentoring sessions with senior officers and senior enlisted members who volunteer their time in support of their shipmates. ANSO is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to the recruitment, retention and promotion of Hispanics and Latinos across all ranks of the United States Sea Services.
