Gen. James C. McConville, the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, presents a U.S. flag to the mayor of Villers-sur-Fère, Mr. Dèlèans, during a WWI unknown soldier burial ceremony at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. McConville accepted the flag on behalf of the unknown soldier’s family.
This unique event came during the 100th anniversary of the American Battle Monuments Commission, an independent federal agency charged with honoring America’s fallen overseas whether they be known or unknown.
