230607-N-PW480-1070 APRA HARBOR, Guam (June 7, 2023) – A physical scientist assigned to the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) secures a Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) to its cradle while aboard USNS Henson (T-AGS 63) in Apra Harbor, Guam, June 7. A Naval Oceanography detachment embarked on Military Sealift Command (MSC) unit USNS Henson prepares to conduct hydrographic and bathymetric work in the inner and outer harbor of Naval Base Guam as part of Typhoon Mawar recovery efforts. Typhoon Mawar moved through the area as a Category 4 storm on May 24, bringing hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and high seas marking the strongest storm to affect the island since Typhoon Pongsona in 2002.
Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command directs and oversees more than 2,500 globally-distributed military and civilian personnel who collect, process, and exploit environmental information to assist Fleet and Joint Commanders in all warfare areas to make better decisions faster than the adversary.
