Matthew Pitts, left, the UH-1N deputy branch head and test pilot at Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE), and Gabriel Rodriguez, a UH-1N plane captain, utilize a battery-powered ground power unit (GPU) while conducting checks on a UH-1N helicopter. FRCE’s UH-1N production line is swapping out diesel-powered GPUs for battery-powered GPUs, becoming the first adapter of this technology within the Naval Aviation community. Depot officials say the battery-powered GPUs minimize energy consumption, increase efficiency and enhance workplace safety.
