Members of the Joint Task Force - National Capital Region Inaugural Staff salute during the ceremonial Changing of the Guards at Tomb of the Unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, Nov. 15, 2012. The service members' visit was part of a newcomer's orientation, designed to provide the new members of the inaugural staff an overview of JTF-NCR missions and responsibilities as well as a first-hand look at JTF-NCR's ceremonial support for the 57th Presidential Inauguration. JTF-NCR is a joint force command, comprised of members of all five of the United States armed services, coordinates the ceremonial support activities of the more than 5,000 service members slated to take part in the Presidential Inaugural Parade and other events during the 2013 Inauguration Week. The tradition of U.S. military participation in inaugural events started April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony at Federal Hall in New York City.
