Members of the cake escort detail render a salute for the national anthem during Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow’s annual birthday ball held Nov. 10 aboard the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif. During the ball, a cake cutting ceremony is held in which youngest and oldest Marine present share the first piece of cake to symbolize the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.
