U.S. Army Spc. Patrick Steinmetz, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Short Term Individual augmentee (STIA), presses a shovel blade into a mound of soil during a recovery mission in Italy, June 23, 2023. Every inch of soil taken from a recovery site is screened for possible life support equipment or material evidence, then analyzed by a scientific recovery expert who determines relevancy to the case at hand. Steinmetz was part of a recovery team searching for possible human remains from World War II, of which there are approximately 72,000 service members unaccounted for.
