CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti (June 19, 2023) Service members performed poetry readings and a step dance routine at a Juneteenth celebration, on Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, June 19. Juneteenth is an observance to the official end of slavery, after U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger proclaimed 250,000 enslaved African Americans free in Galveston, Texas, June 19, 1865. CLDJ is an operational installation that enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to be where and when they are needed to ensure security in Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia.
