Vehicles pass within inches of each other through the darkened Salang Tunnel in Parwan province, Afghanistan, recently. Inside, the tunnel can become pitch black, and the air is filled with deadly carbon monoxide. While there are other routes through the Hindu Kush, the tunnel is the quickest, most efficient road and deemed most protected from insurgent attacks
