Col. Andrew Roddan, 374th Airlift Wing commander, pours bourbon onto a B-29 memorial as part of a U.S.-Japan Joint Memorial Service June 24, 2023, at Mt. Shizuhata, Shizuoka City, Japan. The memorial service provided participants the opportunity to honor those who lost their lives during a World War II air raid on June 20, 1945. During the raid, two U.S. Army Air Force B-29 Superfortress aircraft collided mid-air over Shizuoka City, resulting in the death of 23 Airmen on board the aircraft and over 2,000 Japanese residents during the raid itself. The blackened canteen was recovered from one of the B-29 crash sites and now serves as a symbol of peace and reconciliation. Once a year, the canteen is filled with American bourbon and poured onto the B-29 monument. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Spencer Tobler)
