U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Daniel Soto, senior enlisted advisor for Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz, alongside community members, render honors during the National Anthem at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of the passing of Medal of Honor recipient Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams on Asan Beach, Guam, June 29, 2023. Marine Corps retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Williams, the last living World War II Medal of Honor recipient, passed away, June 29, 2022. Born on October 2, 1923 in Quiet Dell, WV, Woody enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve May 26, 1943, and advanced to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 before his retirement in 1969 after 17 years of service.
